Anthony Stallings Obituary

Anthony W. “Tony” Stallings, 54, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on April 26, 2026, at his home, surrounded by those who meant the most to him, after a brave battle with cancer. Tony was born in Evansville on June 14, 1971, the son of Alice (Willis) Stallings.

Tony was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country before returning home to begin a long career of public service. He first served as the Mt. Vernon Animal Control Officer for several years, before becoming a reserve officer with the Mt. Vernon Police Department, where he was known as MV13. He also served as a member of the Mt. Vernon Fire Department. In 2005, Tony was sworn in as a full-time officer with the Mt. Vernon Police Department, proudly graduating from the first class of the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, “the real academy.” He served in this role for over 21 years.

Tony truly dedicated his life to protecting and serving his community. He especially enjoyed visiting local schools, where he would walk the halls and never pass up the opportunity to jokingly embarrass one of “his kids.” Though he may not have always believed it himself, Tony had a natural ability to connect with people—something his coworkers witnessed time and time again. He later continued his service as a civil process officer with the Posey County Sheriff’s Office and as a Deputy Marshal with the New Harmony Police Department. Though his early years came with their share of challenges, he went on to build a life defined by service, dedication, and giving back to the community he loved.

While he was often known for his gruff, no-nonsense demeanor, those who knew him best understood the depth of his character. Beneath that exterior was a kind and generous man who would do anything for his friends, family, and community. He had a wicked sense of humor that kept those around him in stitches. Tony was also an excellent cook and could often be found outside preparing something on his faithful Weber charcoal grill. He enjoyed finding recipes, making them his own, and sharing the results with others—you counted yourself lucky if you were on the list to try his latest creation. He was especially known for his homemade salsa and pickles, making several batches each summer and delivering them all over Mt. Vernon, even taking time to share them with kids at school during lunch.

Tony also enjoyed collecting, buying, selling, and buying back again firearms, and he always appreciated any chance to spend time at the range. In addition, he had a love for collecting, particularly science fiction items, and was often on the hunt for his next find at yard sales, thrift stores, and antique shops.

Tony is survived by his daughter, Jessica Stallings; his significant other, Airian Crow; and numerous others whom he considered family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Stallings, and his son, Benjamin Stallings.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Denning Family Funeral Home, with Rev. Bryan Thompson officiating, with burial to follow in Weiss Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a public servant walk-through at 6:00 p.m, and again on Monday from 10:00 until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at denningfamilyfuneralhome.com.
