Brenda G. VanZant, 79, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on October 7, 2025, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital with her 4 children, family, and a close personal friend by her side. Brenda was born on May 3, 1946, the daughter of the late John Bailey and Ruby (Barnes) Ricketts.
On May 21, 1963, Brenda married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” VanZant, and together they built a loving family. A devoted wife and mother, Brenda dedicated her life to raising her children and caring for their home. That same love and devotion extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.
Brenda was a strong woman of faith and an active member of the Point Township Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed playing softball for many years and proudly competed on several teams throughout her life. Her love for the sport carried over to following college softball and other college athletics. Brenda also loved watching her Hallmark shows—especially the Christmas specials—which brought her much joy and comfort. More than anything, she cherished time spent surrounded by her family.
Brenda is survived by her children, Teresa (Larry) Gross, Jim (Sherri) VanZant, Tim (Barb) VanZant, and Michelle (Trent) VanZant-Givens; grandchildren, Scott Cox, Sean (Rebecca) Cox, River VanZant, Hunter (Katherine) VanZant, Josh (Wren) VanZant, Ethan VanZant, Skyler (Maria) Davis, TJ (Autumn) Davis, Briana Ours, and Macer Ours; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, John Bailey; and sister-in-law, Pam Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; grandson, Steve Cox; brother, Donnie Bailey; and sisters, Sue Ayers, Norma Hawkins, and Faye Pollard.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Denning Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Bryan Thompson and Rev. Dallas Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Weiss Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Brenda’s name to the Point Township Church of the Nazarene “Beyond the Walls” Ministry. Online condolences may be left at denningfamilyfuneralhome.com
