Dennis Lee Steele, 52, of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, passed away on June 27, 2025. Born on November 4, 1972, in Eldorado, Illinois, Dennis was the son of Ben and Dollie Steele.
He graduated in 1993 from Gallatin County High School and went on to build a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and deep devotion to those around him. Known for his generous spirit and unwavering dedication to his community, Dennis was a caregiver to many of his Point Township neighbors—always ready to lend a hand or offer support when it was needed most.
Dennis shared his life with his beloved wife, Phillona “Gross” Steele. Their bond was one of enduring love and mutual respect; he treated her like the princess she was to him.
Family meant everything to Dennis. He is remembered fondly by his brothers: Benny “Banjo” Steele, Ronnie “Rock” Steele, Jim (Gerri Ann) Steele, and Mike (Tracy) Steele; sisters: Barb Bomar, Joyce Palmer, Pat Howell, Brenda (Charlie) Houchin, and Angie Wilhelm; and his son: William ‘Tucker” Steele. He also held a special place in his heart for his niece Kim (Matt) Morgan.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Dollie Steele; his stepson, Sullivan “Sully” Coburn; niece, Mary Ann Steele; nephew, Ethan Steele; Freddy Bomar; and brother-in-law, Fred Bomar, and his best furry hunting buddy, Duke.
A man of many passions, Dennis found joy in the great outdoors. He loved hunting, boating, fishing, riding horses and camping—activities that reflected both his adventurous spirit and appreciation for nature’s beauty. He especially enjoyed riding his side-by-side through the countryside and took great pride in working with his 2016 Mahindra tractor. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Cubs fan, Dennis never missed a chance to cheer on his teams.
Those who knew Dennis will remember him as someone who lived fully and gave freely—of time, care, laughter, and love. His presence brought comfort to many and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
