Donald "Duck" Mercer Obituary

Donald “Duck” Mercer, 74, of New Harmony, passed away unexpectedly on September 16, 2025. Donnie was born in Posey County, the son of Damon and Wilma (Goff) Mercer.

Donnie was happily married to his wife, Joanie (Fischer) Mercer, for 40 years.

A proud member of the National Guard. Donnie worked for his family at their store, Mercer Feed Store, and later took over ownership of the store with his brother and ran it for several years. Donnie was a lifelong farmer who loved being out in the fields. In addition to farming, he pumped oil wells for many years and, in recent years, enjoyed working with Jackson Farms. Donnie also served as the Lynn Township Trustee for many years, where he was instrumental in revamping and bringing new life to the Wilson Community Center, making it a welcoming space for the community to rent and enjoy, as well as helping countless others in Lynn Township through his service.

Dedicated to serving others, Donnie was actively involved with Posey County 4-H, serving on the board numerous times. Over the years, he also drove a school bus, a role that connected him to his community in countless ways.

Family meant everything to Donnie. While he loved them all dearly, his grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. He was actively involved in their lives and made sure to include them in everything he did.

Donnie is survived by his wife, Joanie; children, John (Jenny) Blackburn and Brad (Madi) Mercer; grandchildren, Alexis and Tyler Blackburn and Peyton and Walker Mercer; siblings, Josephine (Martin) Means, Rosetta (Leon) Jones, Barbara (Dallas) Robinson, Patricia Evans, Damon (Mary) Mercer, Doris (Tom) Brakie, Rick (Debbie) Mercer, and Cheryl (Jeff) Mulvey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Denning Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Posey County Fair Association Board or Newlife Animal Rescue. Online condolences may be shared at denningfamilyfuneralhome.com.
