Gilbert E. Miller, Sr., 81, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on October 18, 2025, at Premier Healthcare of New Harmony. Gilbert was born in Parker Settlement on September 24, 1944, the son of Floyd and Katherine (McDaniel) Miller.
Gilbert graduated from North Posey High School, Class of 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving three years on active duty, including time stationed in Korea, and later several years in the Army Reserves. Following his military service, Gilbert worked for GAF in Mt. Vernon, where he retired. Not one to sit still, he then began a second career at AutoZone, where he worked until his second retirement.
Gilbert was a dedicated sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, IU basketball, and Chicago Bears football. He had a passion for restoring cars inside and out and owned and raced cars throughout his life. In his downtime, he enjoyed watching classic western movies.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Karen (Carroll) Miller; sons, Gilbert (Gina) Miller and Floyd Miller; grandchildren, Garrett Owen, Emily (Lukas) Morrow, Paige Miller, and Aubrey Miller; great-grandchildren; brothers, Floyd (Norma) Miller and Steve (Denise) Miller; sisters, Norma (Paul) Connors, Diane Ricketts, and Pam (Gary) Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, JR Owen.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Denning Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Bryan Thompson officiating. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
