Janice A (Hinrichs) Gunnels

Janice A. Gunnels, 79, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on July 22, 2025, at Deaconess Hospital. She was born on November 24, 1945, to William and Doris (Owens) Hinrichs.

Janice was married to Donnie Gunnels, who preceded her in death in 2014.

She spent many years in the local bar scene, owning and operating Idlewild Bar in Mt. Vernon and later working as a cook and bartender at Hawk’s Tavern. Janice truly loved her work—she thrived on the energy, friendships, and good times that came with it. She was known for her vibrant spirit and her love of scratch-offs, having celebrated more than one big win over the years. In her later years, Janice enjoyed relaxing with her favorite crime shows and spending time with her family.

Janice is survived by her children, Ronald (Tonya) McKinney, Billy (Jody) McKinney, Lance (Crystal) McKinney, and Amanda Litchfield; her stepchildren, Kim Gunnels, Penny Talkington, and Donna Gunnels-Grant; grandchildren, Sammie McKinney, Nicole Meadows, Alex McKinney, Abbie McKinney, Kristopher McKinney, Conner McKinney, Jessie Stephens, and Jimi Talkington; along with many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Cynthia (Norm) Regez; brother-in-law, Sonny Miller; and numerous dear friends.

In addition to her husband, Janice was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Miller.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Denning Family Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
