Mary "Sis" E. (Rook) Claxton

Mary “Sis” E. (Rook) Claxton, 96, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehab. Sis was born in Stroud, Oklahoma on July 2, 1926, the daughter of Albert and Ruth (Tipton) Rook. She married Olen Claxton and he preceded her in death in 1971.

She enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially in her later years. She worked for Bud Funkhouser for several years and followed him to Bud’s Hardware where she worked for 40-plus years. She enjoyed working at the Hardware store and met many friends there. She was also an Owen Dunn American Legion Women’s Auxiliary member. Sis was strong in her faith and was a member of Harvestime Temple.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Blackburn; son, Ramon (Deborah) Claxton; grandchildren, Tracey (Chris) Parrish, Angie Claxton, Tiffany Harper, Eric (Sarah) Blackburn; great-grandchildren, Gary Parrish, Jake Claxton, Madyson Haines, Reece Harper, and Violet Blackburn, and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Grady Ward, Frank, and Albert Rook.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 28, 2023, at the Denning Family Funeral Home. Rev Mark Tabor will be officiating, and burial will follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 10:30 am until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Owen Dunn American Legion. Online condolences may be left at denningfamilyfuneralhome.com.
